The Weather and What I Wear
The ship is safest when it’s in port, but that’s not what ships were built for. ― Paulo Coelho Heat, Humidity & Sand Many people presume that all of Saudi Arabia is an arid desert. But Dammam is on the East coast of KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), across the water from Bahrain and northwest of Qatar, so it actually gets plenty of humidity. Today for example, I woke up to 78% humidity. But only 1% chance of rain! Extra humid my first morning here, after a cyclone in Oman! When I first arrived, temperatures were in the high 90s during the day, but they have already dropped down to low 90s, and will continue to drop for the next couple of months. I’m soooo happy that we didn’t get here in July, when the temperatures can get to 120. I was a bit nervous, as in Thailand two years ago the heat knocked me out for a couple of weeks. But I’m happy to report I’ve adapted pretty quickly, and I’m already calling 80 “nice and cool.” That said, I take my daily walks first thing in the morning,...
The Road Trip Before the Plane Trip
Quiet Moments In late August, Adrian finally got a departure date of mid-September. We moved our stuff into storage, flew to Maryland to visit his father, then took a few quiet days in Western Wyoming together, replacing Denver traffic with some bovine friends. Hitting the Road Back in Denver, Adrian packed the big bag on the right and headed to Saudi Arabia. I dropped him at the airport, then headed out on a 2000 mile road trip. The Badlands, Crazy Horse & Bear's Tipi This was my first trip to this part of the United States. The Badlands were awe-inspiring. (The photo at the very top of this email was taken there). Crazy Horse is very much still in progress. The museum of Native American art and history was wonderful. It was wonderful to see my friend Ellen, and celebrate 35 years of friendship! She enticed me with visions of the Badlands, and a visit to Bear's Tipi (which the European's dubbed "Devil's Tower"), the first National Monument in the U.S. Canada Those who know of my...
My Grace Hopper Celebration 2021 Experience
I attended the 2021 Grace Hopper Celebration, held September 27-October 1. Feeling lots of appreciation to the organizers of this year's conference, and my fellow attendees who went out of their way to be resources for each other! Since the event was virtual this year, I had an initial instinct to try to go to a hotel somewhere that I wouldn't want to do any sightseeing or visit anyone. And I think that was a good instinct — to try to replicate the feeling of being there in person, of it being my full focus. But... that's not what I created. I was visiting friends and had pulls on my emotions and time. I was distracted by logistics and emotions around leaving the continent the following week. And I had some technical difficulties, which meant I missed part of a few sessions. I regret that I missed out on some networking and learning opportunities by not preparing better ahead of time (by reading every prep email closely, for example), and not making the time to figure out how to get...
Gamedev.js Jam 2021 Postmortem
I spent the last couple of weeks participating in Gamedev.js Jam 2021. I've been getting some ideas for games to develop, and I set a goal to start participating in jams. I went to itch.io to see what jams were coming up and saw the Gamedev.js one had 12 days remaining in it. Plenty of time! The theme, "Mirrors" offered lots of possibilities. Why not give it a go?! It turns out that what I created was ... not super-awesome. BUT I achieved many things, some that I hoped for and some unexpected: Participated in my first game jam ever! Able to put the first hash next to my white board item "Game Jams." Learned how to package and upload a project to itch. Came up with an idea, fleshed it out with some thought to levels, and created a simple version of it, overcoming coding and technology hurdles. Experimented with HTML5/JS game engines. Learned about IPFS and the decentralized/distributed web, plus NFTs, crypto, and the Brave browser. Learned easy ways to reverse and flip gifs and audio....
